Wie verändert Corona das Studium? Teil 2 / How Corona changes the way we study, pt. 2

Was heißt das?

The FHWS library is strong. It is especially strong in providing information of all kinds in electronic form: e-books, e-journals, databases…

The whole portfolio of electronic information resources is not only accessible within the FHWS network: via the external access, students and lecturers can access their books, scientific papers and other scientific papers from anywhere in the world.

At the moment 5,000 students have activated this access (how do the other 4,000 actually study?) and so the monthly data flow can be a good indicator of how the daily study routine changes in corona times.

Before the pandemic, the volume of data transported per month fluctuated between 5 and 9 GB. That’s a huge amount. But with the shutdown, this usage literally exploded: 36 GB in March, an incredible 362 GB in April and then gently „falling“ to 246 GB in July. Taht makes an increase by several thousand percent!

What is now the lessons learned? The students have also been extremely active in the online semester. The electronic offers of the library are an important part of the online teaching. The library was without customers in the library rooms for some time during shutdown, but still had more customers than ever before in the virtual space. The challenges for a scientific library have grown considerably due to Corona. We have mastered these challenges.
